VOLLEYBALL LOTTO VOLLEY LEAGUE: KNACK ROESELARE

Roeselare –

In December last year, Sander Depovere (29) decided to end his career as a professional volleyball player. Naturally, he wants to say goodbye on a high note with one more national title at Knack Roeselare. “If I succeed, there will be fifteen trophies in my personal trophy cabinet. A nice number to end with,” says the playmaker.

As a youth player at Knack, Sander Depovere went to the volleyball school in Vilvoorde, played three seasons at the now defunct Antwerp and one year at Menen, and will soon complete his seventh season and his professional career at Roeselare. “In those eleven years I won one cup with Antwerp and I was able to celebrate six cup victories, three titles and four Super Cups with Knack. A fifteenth prize would put a nice icing on the cake.”

“At the age of 29, I could have played a few more seasons at the highest level, but an opportunity not to be missed presented itself,” continues the Knack super sub, best known for his substitutes as block reinforcement and series of hard jump serves. “I was given the opportunity to become a full-time manager of ‘Studio Frank’, a showroom for Italian windows and doors, in Roeselare. I have been doing that as a side job since the beginning of 2023 and am therefore already familiar with the matter.”

“I’m not giving up volleyball completely yet, because I will be playing at a lower level from next season”

“I am at the beginning of a new life and I am looking forward to it with great interest,” says Depovere. “More time for my family? Or the other way around… As a top athlete you have to train a lot and hard, but you are also often at home to rest. It will certainly be a major adjustment. I’m not giving up volleyball completely yet, because from next season I will be playing at a lower but still national level. I can’t reveal which club yet. No, not even whether or not it will be a West Flemish team.”

He does not yet know whether Sander Depovere will be able to direct the young Roeselare substitutes against Aalst on Saturday, just like last week in Maaseik. “I would be surprised. Perhaps trainer-coach Steven Vanmedegael has something else in store. It will be an important match for Aalst, because the Onions will defend their second place.”
