Giorgio Sernagiotto’s first stars and stripes appointment has arrived: for the second time in his career at Daytona, again with Cetilar racing with a Ferrari 488 Gt3 Evo and with the aim of chasing the Imsa Michelin Endurance Cup, a trophy that you decide on four races that will make your wrists tremble: 24 Hours of Daytona (which began on Sunday with the qualifying race), 12 Hours of Sebring, 6 Hours of Glen and Petit Le Mans. On Sunday, in the Italian evening, Cetilar racing’s Ferrari qualified in twelfth place in the Gt Daytona class, where it will find another 21 opponents ready to make life difficult.
All Ferraris struggled harder than Lamborghini, Mercedes and Porsche, but Serna and teammates Roberto Lacorte, Antonio Fuoco and reigning world champion Gt Am Alessio Rovera were the fastest among the crews driving a car of Maranello: “We have confidence with regards to the race”, assures the driver from Caerano, who last year just with Cetilar came close to victory at Daytona with the Dallara P217 Lmp2: “It will be a very long 24 hours during which anything can happen , and for this reason the qualifications in races of this type have a very relative weight. We have a good race pace and we will try to make it pay off: the last free practice sessions will help us to put our Ferrari completely in order », assures Serna.
The first of his star-and-stripe weekends already sees him enthusiastic. The Caeranese has already raced in Daytona and fell in love with the track as well as with a race with a long and prestigious history, now born in 1962 and second in importance and prestige only at Le Mans: “I still did a few laps this weekend but I immediately felt comfortable. I really like the circuit especially for the three corners on the oval: the slope of the track reaches 60%. It’s always impressive, ”he confesses.
The prestige of the race comes from afar and still speaks today. Thanks also to the epic battles between Ferrari, Ford and Porsche of the 60s and 70s in the American 24 Hours, the name of the Florida track was used in 1994 for the video game “Daytona Usa” released by the Japanese of Sega: focused on the world Nascar was a success for realism, sound and graphics.
