The pivot winger Giorgio Sgobba is, together with the play Simoncelli and the pivot Corral, one of the three summer hits of Omnia. Raised in the youth teams of Mens Sana Siena, he turned 29 a few days ago and has just returned from a (tormented) season in Omegna.
«Also this I have a great desire to start over and that we can finally return to normal – underlines Sgobba – the first goal is to do better than last year in Omegna. The stop for Covid one month before the start of the championship was very complicated, including injuries, factors that had an impact. For this I arrive in Pavia mentally and physically prepared: this season will be very important, I will have the opportunity to play in a club with great ambitions. From the point of view of commitment and mentality, I will give my best. I can play from four but also from five tactician ».
Trust in the group
Omnia has built an important, complete group. «We don’t lack anything to do well – says the pivot winger – we have experienced players and everyone wants to prove something. Athletes like Simoncelli and Corral have won a championship and they know how to do it. There are interesting young people like Calzavara, others with high objectives like Donadoni and D’Alessandro, but also the various Conte and Torgano complete the group in a great way ».
Sgobba played against what is now his coach. «I was very young and Di Bella the playmate of Virtus Bologna – he remembers – has always been a tough and physical player. They told me that as a coach he does a lot of work and that’s what it takes ». Defined the groups, Pavia is playing with Piedmontese and Tuscan teams. «It is a very interesting group – he observes – the fields of the Tuscan teams are difficult, intense basketball is played, with many blows. Apart from the PalaMacchia of Livorno, the others are small arenas, where the players let themselves be carried away by the public, like San Miniato. Let’s not forget the Piedmontese, like Omegna who, despite losing the main sponsor, built a fighting team. I would say the two Leghorns, we, Omegna, Legnano and Vigevano are worth keeping an eye on ». The first real match will be in mid-September in the Super Cup against Crema. «It’s a new team, with a coach as good as Ghizzinardi – says Sgobba – it will be a good match. It is a difficult start, but I am convinced that we must immediately show what we are made of ». Sgobba’s secret passion is cooking: «I have always been passionate about it but love broke out with the lockdown, on TV I didn’t miss a program on the subject. In Pavia I will have the induction oven, I have already procured the necessary ». –
