Snooker Welsh Open: Marco Fu Advances to Top 32, Upsets Abound

China News Service, Beijing, February 15th. On the morning of the 15th, Beijing time, the third day of the 2024 Snooker Welsh Open ended with Hong Kong star Marco Fu narrowly passing the test and advancing to the top 32. Many famous players were upset in this round of the competition.

The third day of the Welsh Open featured a one-day double match format. In the first round of the main event (64 out of 32), only 3 out of 7 Chinese players were able to advance, with Fu Jiajun being the sole victor.

Fu Jiajun, a 46-year-old “Triple Crown” ranking tournament winner, has faced challenges in recent seasons due to an eye disease. However, he showed signs of recovery after defeating top-ranked Mark Selby in a postponed qualifying match for the German Masters in late January this year.

Facing England player Zach Schulti, Marco Fu found himself falling behind 1-3. However, he remained calm and launched a strong counterattack, winning three consecutive games to advance with a final score of 4-3.

Unfortunately, the two other Chinese players who appeared on the third day were defeated, resulting in only three Chinese players advancing to the top 32 out of the 10 who participated in the first round. Additionally, many top-ranked players, including Mark Selby and Neil Robertson, were eliminated in surprising upsets.

As the fourth day of the Welsh Open approaches, there will be a final match of 32 to 16 rounds and a 16 to 8 round match. Fu Jiajun will face off against Irish youngster Aaron Hill to compete for a spot in the top 16.
