Stadiums, first time at 75% but Serie A is not enough

Tomorrow the capacity increases: stop even at the limits (fictitious and never respected) of the distancing The clubs are asking to raise attendance to 100%: possible with the Milan derby on 7 November

Until a few months ago it would have been a dream. Now Serie A hopes it’s just a three-week parenthesis. The next day will be the first with the capacity raised to 75%, after a championship start with the limit set in the middle of each stadium. The first to benefit will be the fans of Spezia, Lazio and Milan, tomorrow in the home advances with Salernitana, Inter and Verona.

Coincidence wanted the calendar to reward the most loyal spectators of this first part of the season. The audience of La Spezia filled the “Peak” to 96%. Followed by Inter (87%), Juventus and Milan (83%). It seems paradoxical, but after a year and a half of lockdown, fans have not fully exploited the partial reopening. The League and the clubs, however, immediately ask the government to go up to 100% in order not to lose further economic ground compared to the Premier League, Liga and Ligue 1, where there are no more restrictions. They could be satisfied for the 12th day (5-6-7 November) that shows the Milan derby on the bill. And to say that, before the stop due to the pandemic, in Serie A 2019-20 only six teams could boast more than 75% of the coverage: Juventus, Turin, Inter, Atalanta, Cagliari, Fiorentina and Udinese (in addition to Spal now in B) . So the current concession may already be sufficient for the majority of companies.

The impatience to return to full capacity arises above all from the desire to monetize the very games, from a sold out stadium. To give two examples: Juventus will have to give up about € 600,000 in cash on Sunday evening against Roma, Inter over a million seven days later in the Italian derby with the Juventus team at San Siro. The same goes for provincial fields when the big ones arrive. Clubs are also waiting 100% to reopen membership campaigns. The only exception is Rome which has already sold 15,000 seasonal tickets in 24 hours.

With the increase in capacity, the fiction of distancing an alternating seat, imposed by the government in August, will disappear. In some areas (curves and guest sectors) the rule was completely ignored. There are no particular novelties in the protocol issued yesterday by the FIGC to incorporate the novelty. Fans are encouraged to have food and drinks on site without traveling to the bar. And above all, they are required to present themselves at the entrances well in advance for the Green Pass control operations. –
