Surf, take a cue from… boxing! Train like this

Other than two opposite worlds: this is how boxing exercises can be useful for surfing. Rocco Vassallo, a 24-year-old boxer, talks about it

Is there a meeting point between two apparently poles apart sports like surfing and boxing? Yes, it’s all about training. Especially abroad, in particular, the trend is very widespread for those who surf to use boxing exercises to train their body. In Australia and America for years the two disciplines have been mixed from this point of view, but in Italy still not. We talked about it with Rocco Vassallo, 24-year-old boxer and son of Stefano Vassallo, Italian heavyweight champion in the 1980s.

SIMILARS – In areas of the world where the practice of mixing surfing and boxing is already widespread, the two disciplines influence each other with an equal exchange. And functional boxing workouts can be a very interesting plus for the surfer. As Rocco Vassallo explains to us: “Boxing is a sport in which attention and speed are essential, just like in surfing. They are both adrenaline sports, there is little reaction time. And also the position that is taken is very similar, with a constant search for balance and stability. For example, in boxing the leg is planted as in surfing ”. But which boxing exercises can be useful for surfers?

EXERCISES – “There are a series of exercises in isometry, to work on both balance and effort in movement. For example, you can use barbells, dumbbells, the medicine ball, the kettlebell. But also the ropes and the rope, as well as all the exercises on core stability, fundamental in both disciplines “. This is a great way to train out of the water, an aspect that should not be underestimated if you want to be very performing on the board. “In boxing, all muscle chains work, from the ankles to the neck. And this also happens in surfing ”.

MOVEMENT – In short, surfing and boxing “seem to be two opposite worlds, but instead they have one point in common. So much so that this thing abroad is proven, while in Italy there is a movement to be created. Even if the younger kids are starting to understand it, thanks above all to the videos they see on social networks ”. Rocco Vassallo tried surfing, but his life is dedicated to boxing. In which the training is also studied on the basis of the period of the season: “The exercises vary according to the competition: far from a match it becomes fund (long run, heavier weights, machinery, dumbbells); close to the match we work on the exhausts, we concentrate more on the technical part and transform what we put in the luggage ”. And who knows that boxing will soon become a reference point for surfing also in Italy: “We need to fine-tune this thing in our country, there is a need to try to create a format that brings together the functional training of the boxing with the needs of surfers “.
