The Limburg Team Roux finished fifth at the Heineken Regatta in Sint Maarten, an island in the Caribbean Sea. The team consists of eight Limburgers who work in construction. “We were actually first and so we won.”

No second third place for Team Roux, which won bronze at the Heineken Regatta in Sint Maarten last year. However, they went to the sailing competition on the island in the Caribbean with a lot of confidence. “This year we rented the sailboat that won last year, but still fifth is the end result this year,” says chairman Eddy Oeyen.

Team Roux consists of eight Limburg self-employed people from the construction industry; Roux paint wholesaler, Baillien Schilderwerken, ASW windows, Bisar Architects, Art2 livin, Schilderwerken Moors, Bright Alliance and Lumo Decor. “We also hire a captain every year and this year it was an Antwerp resident,” Eddy laughs.

“We are going to Barbados with two or three boats next year.”

The Heineken Regatta celebrated its 44th anniversary this year. It is the largest regatta in the Caribbean and attracts more than 20,000 visitors to the island every year. “This year, 131 boats participated again in nine different categories. Every year we participate in the ‘Bareboat’ competition. That is the category with rented sailboats and this year we were in competition with 27 different boats.”

The ambition was to reach the podium this year, but that didn’t go entirely according to plan. “But actually we are first and we did win. The four teams that finished ahead of us are all professional sailing teams. I don’t want to call it an unfair battle, but in our minds we are somewhat the winner. We have put Limburg on the map,” says Eddy with pride.

Despite fifth place, it was still a successful edition for Team Roux. “They asked us to put sailing in Barbados on the map. So we’re going to Barbados with two or three boats next year. It feels a bit like cheating, because we go from Heineken to rum,” Eddy laughs.
