On November 16, the official of the Formula One (F1) Alfa Romeo team announced that Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu officially joined the team, becoming the first F1 driver in Chinese history and writing another milestone in Chinese motor sports.

A reporter from Xinhua News Agency interviewed Zhou Guanyu for the first time to understand Zhou Guanyu’s mood after becoming China’s first F1 driver and the hardships along the way.

“When I heard this news, I felt like I was dreaming. It didn’t feel real, but I was very excited. It felt like something that I had long-awaited in my heart had finally landed.” Zhou Guanyu said, “After all, I am a F1 driver. What I have always dreamed of, now that it can be truly realized, is of great significance to me.”

Zhou Guanyu, born in Shanghai in 1999, has developed a keen interest in racing since he was a child. After practicing karting for more than two years, Zhou Guanyu swept all eight championships of the National Karting Championship at the age of 10, demonstrating his strong driver talent. In 2010, with the support of his parents, 11-year-old Zhou Guanyu went to the UK to go to school while training, and started his career in karting in Europe. While successively winning the National Championship, the All England Championship and the European Championship for the 14 to 17 year olds, the Ferrari Driver Academy threw an olive branch to him. After starting his Formula Racing career, from F4, F3, F2 and now to become a F1 racing driver, Zhou Guanyu has been “upgrading” with his outstanding record.
