2024 Asian Ski Mountaineering Championships Conclude with Chinese Team Dominance

The 2024 Asian Ski Mountaineering Championships wrapped up on March 6 at the Vanke Songhua Lake Ski Resort in Jilin City, Jilin Province, with the Chinese team emerging as the dominant force of the event. Chinese players clinched all seven gold medals up for grabs in the competition.

In the men’s and women’s individual cross-country championships, Chinese team athletes emerged victorious, solidifying their dominance in the sport. Brewer of the Chinese team secured the men’s individual cross-country race title with a time of 57 minutes and 19 seconds, while Cidan Yuzhen led the women’s individual cross-country race with a time of 1 hour, 05 minutes and 52 seconds.

Both Brewer and Cidan Yuzhen were standout performers in the championships, with Cidan also claiming victory in the women’s vertical racing, individual sprint, and individual cross-country events, while Brewer excelled in the men’s vertical racing and individual cross-country, and together they won the mixed relay.

Ismail Tokhtar Aili of the Chinese team clinched the men’s individual short distance championship, further showcasing China’s dominance in the sport.

Li Wenmao, director of the Alpine Sports Department of the Mountaineering Management Center of the State Sports General Administration, commended the team’s performance, stating that the achievements indicate progress towards the 2026 Winter Olympics. He emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and focused preparation for future competitions.

Ski mountaineering, which originated from traditional mountain travel practices, has seen a resurgence in popularity as it prepares to return to the Winter Olympics in 2026. The sport is gaining traction in various Asian countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, and Iran.

Pierre Dupont, vice president of the International Ski Mountaineering Federation, lauded the development of ski mountaineering in Asia and praised the organization of the competition by the China Mountaineering Association. The 2024 Asian Ski Mountaineering Championships served as a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and set the stage for the sport’s continued growth in the region. As ski mountaineering gains prominence in the lead-up to the 2026 Winter Olympics, the event underscored China’s rising prominence in the sport on the international stage.
