The Italian Youth Chess Championships were held in Salsomaggiore Terme.
As many as 600 young people from all over Italy, aged between 6 and 18, challenged each other to win the title of Italian Champion. The Piedmontese chess players competing were 58 among which Sergio Pilo of the Ivrea Chess Society engaged in the Under 12 category. At the end of the nine games played Sergio ranked 15th. Pilo, 12 years old from Montalto Dora, got off to a great start by winning the first four games by beating one of the favorites on the eve. In the fifth round came the first defeat which was followed by two draws that slowed down the race to the podium. In the eighth round came a bitter defeat, a match that could be won. Reaction with a good victory in the last round of the tournament and a final score of six out of nine. –
