It is certainly the South African variant – every viral reference is purely coincidental – the powerful novelty of the newborn United Rugby Championship. Grafted onto the frame of the old all-European Pro12, the four teams of the land of the Springboks are destined to drastically raise the level of a competition that in the previous formulation had received little or nothing on a technical level from the compatriots Cheetahs and Kings. South African poker drops the real aces this time, starting with the Vodacom Bulls playing Saturday in the Rainbow Cup final against Benetton. The Bulls of Pretoria, coached by former coach of the world champion national team (France 2007) Jake White, play at Loftus Versfeld in the administrative capital of the country, in 2007, 2009 and 2010 they won the Super Rugby and boast the player with the most caps in the history of the Springboks, Captain Victor Matfield. Emirates Lions are based in Johannesburg, play at Emirates Airline Park and are coached by Ivan van Rooyen.
Between 2016 and 2018 they played three consecutive Super Rugby finals. Cell C Sharks are based in Durban, their stadium is Jonsson Kings Park and are coached by Sean Everitt. The first Super Rugby final played dates back to 1996, then reached on three other occasions. The most representative player is Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, 159 appearances in the most important tournament in the Southern Hemisphere all wearing the jersey of the franchise. Finally, the Cape Town DHL Stormers: they play at the Cape Town Stadium, are coached by John Dobson and can boast in their ranks the iconic Pieter-Steph du Toit, World Champion and Player of the Year for World Rugby in 2019.
