The Canavese enthusiasts within 24 hours have the opportunity to applaud, on our roads, the flower of world cycling.
The Milan-Turin was staged on Wednesday. It touched the Canavese crossing the Serra and passing through Piverone to then cross Albiano d’Ivrea and point to Cossano, and then head towards Borgo d’Ale.
The final victory in Turin went to the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who had already won the Giro dell’Emilia. British Adam Yates burned.
On Thursday the Canavese and its streets will be the initial walkway of the Gran Piemonte: the start in Rocca Canavese at 12.55, and then remain in Canavese for the first 60 km: Rivara, Busano, Valperga, Cuorgnè, Castellamonte, Torre Canavese, San Martino Canavese , Loranzè, Ivrea (where the race will pass around 2 pm), Burolo and Bollengo, to tackle the Broglina climb and enter the Biellese area. Two days of great cycling, to relive that magical atmosphere that only bicycle races can create: the charm of Sport with the capital “S” that passes on the roads that we travel every day, the champions parading under the windows of our homes or our offices, the colors and noises of the race. And all for free. Because, as Pier Paolo Paolini recalled, “Cycling is the most popular sport because you don’t pay for the ticket”
Reading the list of starters is an emotion: in the Milan-Turin the two-time Tour winner and number one in the world ranking Tadej Pogacar (of UAE Emirates), the winner Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), who has recently competed won his third consecutive Vuelta, Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick Step), 15 days in the pink jersey at the Giro 2020 and confirmed world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), in his first race after the encore world champion. Together with them, other leading names: Adam Yates, Bauke Mollema, Michael Woods (winner of Superga two years ago) and, as regards the Italians, Diego Ulissi, Vincenzo Nibali, Fausto Masnada and Lorenzo Fortunato, just to mention the best known.
No less noble is the list of starters on Thursday that from Rocca Canavese to Borgosesia, in a test dedicated to fast wheels, will try to enter their name in the roll of honor of the Gran Piemonte: there will be the world champion in time trial and gold Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), former world champion Rui Costa (Uae-Team Emirates) and above all there will be the tricolor poker of the last four European champions: Elia Viviani (Cofidis), Matteo Trentin (Uae Emirates), Giacomo Nizzolo (Team Qhubeka NextHash) and Sonny Colbrelli, fresh from Sunday’s triumph in Paris-Roubaix, the most legendary of the classics, which saw him win with the continental champion jersey ideally superimposed on that of the Italian champion, won in June.
The Brescian boasts a good feeling with the races in Piedmont: in 2018 he won the Gran Piemonte at the finish line in Stupinigi, after climbing on the third step of the podium of the same race in 2015, when the classic arrived in Ciriè.
