The Italian tennis player Jasmine Paolini is in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai, the second most important tournament category in tennis after the four Grand Slams: she beat the Romanian Sorana Cirstea in two sets in the semi-final (best of three is played) , with the score 6-2, 7-6. Paolini is the fourth Italian tennis player ever to reach the final in a WTA 1000 tournament: the last, in 2021, was Camila Giorgi in Montreal, who then won the tournament. In the final Paolini will meet the Russian Anna Kalinskaya, number 40 in the women’s world ranking and therefore an easy opponent, who however in the semi-final beat the Polish Iga Swiatek, number 1 in the world. The final is scheduled for Saturday at 4pm and will be broadcast by Sky Sports.

At the moment Paolini, who is 28 years old, is the best Italian tennis player on the women’s circuit: before this tournament she was number 26 in the world, and regardless of how the final goes from next week she will be at least 16th. It is the best moment of her career and in recent months she has been in pretty good shape: in January at the Australian Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, she reached the round of 16, her best result in a tournament of that level. In her career Paolini has won only one tournament, in the WTA 250 category (the fourth most important), in 2021. Last year she reached the final twice in WTA 250 tournaments but she lost on both occasions.
