SAR Government to Review Approval and Supervision Mechanism of “M” Brand Plan Following Messi Incident

After Argentine star Messi’s absence from an exhibition match in Hong Kong, the organizer Tatler Asia withdrew its application for the “M” brand event and refunded 50% of the ticket price to the audience. This decision was made after Messi refused to speak or interact with fans, causing dissatisfaction among attendees.

In response to the incident, Hong Kong Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau Secretary Yang Yunxiong announced that the SAR government will comprehensively review the approval and supervision mechanism of the “M” brand plan. This decision comes after concerns were raised by members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council.

Yang Runxiong, in a written reply, stated that the SAR government will work with the Major Sports Events Committee to review the approval and supervision mechanism of the “M” brand plan. The goal is to further improve relevant plans while also promoting more large-scale international sports events to be held in Hong Kong. The review is expected to be completed around the third quarter of this year.

Regarding Messi’s absence, Yang Runxiong explained that the SAR government had been urging the organizers to explain in detail their arrangements with Inter Miami regarding Messi’s participation in the exhibition match. The government also discussed with the organizers to find feasible solutions to deal with the incident and invited the Consumer Council to participate in the discussion.

Yang Runxiong also expressed that the SAR government welcomes the organizer’s decision to refund relevant subsidies and 50% of ticket prices. He stated that the organizer’s compensation plan is a responsible approach and shows its positive and responsible attitude.
