Turrin: “Sacile-Cortina will take the breath away of athletes and fans”

by admin

«A stage to take your breath away. To the public, for the spectacle that the Dolomites will give, to the runners for the fatigue that awaits them from the first to the last meter ».

Tomorrow at the Giro the Sacile – Cortina will be raced, 212 kilometers long and 5,700 meters in altitude.

The queen stage of the pink race, with the ascents to Cansiglio at the beginning, then Fedaia, Pordoi (which will be Cima Coppi, that is to say the highest gpm) and Giau.

To explain it, but also to talk about cycling which up to three seasons ago was his profession (and which somehow continues to be), we heard Alex Turrin, the last professional from Belluno to have raced the Giro, that of 2018.

«It will be a wonderful stage. Spectacular for the public, very tiring for the runners », begins the boy from Feltre who now works as a representative for the North East of Sportful and Castelli, the two brands of Manifattura Valcismon di Fonzaso. «Six thousand meters of difference in altitude at the beginning of the third week are not few. And if the weather is as bad as it seems, everything will be even more difficult. It starts already uphill in fact, because the climb of the Cansiglio will begin about ten kilometers after the start. I believe that at the start many will warm up on the reels because there will be attempts to take away the escape from the first ramps. And the sprinters will already have to start calculating the maximum time and find the right pace to save themselves. I believe that there will be a battle and that the good escape for the victory could arise in the stretch that goes from Belluno to Caprile, before starting the Fedaia, a climb that it does, we certainly do not find out today, it will do very badly. The hard stretch above Malga Ciapela is the right moment to attack by those who want, and of course will have the strength, to recover in the standings ».

«Then there will be the Pordoi», he continues, «a not very hard climb, but which arrives after a good few kilometers and a lot of difference in height. Pay attention to the thirty kilometers that separate the summit of Pordoi from the start of the Giau: there are some uphill sections, such as the one towards Colle Santa Lucia, which can put additional fatigue on the legs. On the Giau there will be no possibility to hide: it is a demanding and constant slope. Eventually, even the descent can do some damage: fun and technical at the same time. The ingredients for the show are all there. We will then have to see how the group will interpret the day ».

What Giro has it been so far?

«A nice Giro, with never predictable stages. There is more imagination than in the past, perhaps a generation of riders is changing but also that of those who manage them ».

Who did you like the most?

“Beyond those who are at the top of the general, I say Gianni Moscon. Indeed, I finally say Gianni Moscon! We were team mates for a season at Zalf, he is a monstrous talent and I am really happy to see him ride so hard. I saw him at the departure from Turin, thin and toned. He has recovered power, as evidenced by the trains he manages to do even uphill, he who is not a climber. We hope he has left behind the last two seasons in which something has not worked. Hard to say what but, you know, at those levels you just need to miss a comma to slide back. And then “our” Sagan (the Slovak champion wears Sportful, ed): he is going strong and when he won in Foligno he seemed to be in MotoGP. He has immense talent and if he wants to continue to struggle, he still has a few good years ahead. I would like to win the fourth world championship. And how can we not mention Remco Evenepoel? Coming back to the race after eight months of stoppage following an injury and doing the things he did, regardless of what the final result will be, is crazy ».

Are you nostalgic for cycling?

“No. I have never regretted quitting. Of course, sometimes I can miss the environment or the emotions that competition gives you. But it is also true that high-level sport costs effort, both physical and mental. It forces you to be away from home two hundred days a year, it puts a lot of mental pressure on you. To stay on the subject of the Giro d’Italia, let’s say that when in the evening you go to sleep with a sore leg and in the morning you wake up with a sore leg, it is not the most beautiful thing in the world. Here, let’s say that I don’t lack fatigue and stress at all. And that normal life isn’t as bad as many runners think when they quit. Normal life gives you excellent satisfaction and allows you to live certain aspects of life itself that as a runner, immersed as you are in your business, you get lost ».

In the work you do now, did you need the experience gained on the saddle?

«Certainly, even in small things, such as when discussing a zip or a pad, having been an athlete makes me face the question concretely. It is something more that helps ».

Speaking of stress, a rider who has been a reference for you, the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, winner of the 2017 Giro as well as an Olympic medalist and three time trial world championships, last January announced an indefinite stop at the competitive activity, declaring that he wanted to take some time for himself and evaluate his future.

“I liked Tom a lot, perfect on a bike, great time trial. He decided to stop and I understand his choice. In a world that asks you to be more and more performing, there is a certain point that one jumps his head. Especially a top athlete who, always keeping to the Giro theme, in a great stage race must be at the top, physically and mentally, for twenty-one days. Doing three weeks thinking about the general is something that wears out, it’s a business. I say that he did well to try to rebalance himself ».
