[Epoch Times, July 24, 2021](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Xu Zhenqi) On Friday (July 23), the US Congressional Bipartisan Committee responsible for monitoring human rights in China called on the International Olympic Committee to postpone the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. And reschedule the venue of the event unless the CCP changes its persecution of human rights.

In a letter sent to the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach on Friday, the US Senator and Chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) Jeff Merkley ( Jeff Merkley, Oregon Democrat) and CECC co-chair Jim McGovern (Massachusetts Democrat), when urging the International Olympic Committee to postpone the Beijing Winter Olympics, specifically mentioned the CCP’s persecution of the Uyghur Muslim minority .

Senior Republican Senator Marco Rubio (Macro Rubio, Florida) and Senior Representative Chris Smith (New Jersey) also signed the letter. The letter said: “In a country where the government has committed genocide and crimes against humanity, the Olympics should not be held.”

In January this year, the Trump (Trump) administration determined that the CCP’s persecution of Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang, and the establishment of re-education camps and forced labor were “genocide”.

The parliamentarians went on to say that they “believe that if the IOC continues to host the Olympics in a country where the government has committed genocide and crimes against humanity, it will have an extremely negative impact on the Olympic Movement and the entire international community.”

The lawmakers specifically pointed out that in 2018, Rubio and Smith wrote to Bach during their tenure as CECC chairman, “requesting you to use the mediation of the International Olympic Committee to promote the improvement of human rights in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.”

“We did not receive a response.” The letter added.

“Since that letter in 2018, the situation facing Uighurs and other Muslim communities in Xinjiang has further deteriorated.” The lawmakers continued to say in the letter.

They added: “We have not seen any evidence that the International Olympic Committee has taken any measures to force the Chinese (CCP) government to change its behavior.”

Senior members of Congress believe that postponing the Beijing Olympics will “give the host government a period of time to take concrete measures to end its serious human rights violations in Xinjiang, including genocide and crimes against humanity.”

The letter stated that the IOC should also “commit to move the Olympic Games to another country, unless the human rights situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is fundamentally improved, and it is verified by the IOC and the impartial and independent United Nations mechanism.”

They wrote: “The International Olympic Committee is setting a dark precedent. The actions of the governments of the future Olympic Games host countries will not be restricted by the international focus of the Olympic Games.”

The parliamentarians said that the International Olympic Committee has the ability to postpone the Olympics because due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan’s 2020 Summer Olympics were postponed to this year four months before the scheduled opening.

Human rights organizations, researchers, former residents of Xinjiang, and some Western officials stated that the CCP has detained about 1 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities, mainly Muslims, since 2016, thereby facilitating forced labor and other abuses.

They asked USOPC to explain their requirements within 30 days.

The lawmakers wrote in a letter to the U.S. Olympic Committee chairman Susanne Lyons, “The digital renminbi may be used by Beijing to monitor Olympic athletes.”

The Central Bank of China (CCP) issued a white paper on Friday stating that it will expand the “digital renminbi” test object during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and include international business people and overseas tourists in the scope of application.
