US Open, Djokovic dreams of the Grand Slam. Who can beat him?

by admin

The fourth and last Major of the season will begin on Monday 30 August: after the victories of the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the Serbian is one step away from a historic result

Here we are: on Monday 30th August the fourth and final slam of the season begins. Two weeks of great tennis in Flushing Meadows, with the finals scheduled for September 12th. In the men’s draw, all eyes on Novak Djokovic: in one fell swoop the Serbian could complete the Grand Slam (that is, win all four majors of the calendar year) and detach Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for career slam victories. The three champions are all at 20: the Swiss and the Spaniard will not be there.

THE FAVORITE

In short, Djokovic is the big favorite of a tournament he has won three times in his career: in 2011 in the final against Nadal, in 2015 against Federer and in 2018 against Del Potro. Last season, the Serbian was disqualified during the round of 16 against Carreno Busta for the famous ball that hit the touch judge. From that moment in the slams came the defeat in the final of Roland Garros 2020 against Nadal, before the trio of successes in 2021: Australian Open (against Medvedev), Roland Garros (against Tsitsipas) and Wimbledon (against Berrettini).

THE OTHERS

Djokovic outstrips all the others as regards the underdogs on the eve of the tournament. The seeded number 2 of the tournament is Daniil Medvedev, who therefore could only meet Novak in the final: the Russian, finalist at the US Open in 2019 against Nadal, is among the possible antagonists of the number 1 in the world. Attention also to Zverev: the seed number 3 on the scoreboard has been included in the part of Djokovic (possible semifinal between the two) and arrives at the tournament after winning gold at the Olympics and the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati. The German played and lost the final of the last edition, against Dominic Thiem. And Berrettini? The Wimbledon finalist is seeded number 6 and, like all the other Italians, is at the top of the scoreboard: a quarter-final against Djokovic is possible. Matteo’s best result at the US Open is the semifinal in 2019, with the defeat against future champion Nadal.
