Washington, April 9, 2021 – These are hours of anguish in Caribbean, where is the La Soufrière volcano threatens theisland of Saint Vincent. Thousands of people evacuated after researchers monitoring the crater detected magma moving towards the surface. “There is a risk of substantial disaster,” said the National Emergency Management Organization on the island. La Soufriere has been silent for 42 years, since 1979. Its largest eruption, in 1902, killed more than a thousand people.
While Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced the alert on Twitter. “I have issued an evacuation order to all residents living in the red areas in the north east and north west of the island,” he wrote. Saint Vincent is inhabited by about 16 thousand people, several cruise ships have been mobilized to welcome them, which will now act as mobile homes to temporarily house the displaced. Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will send two ships to assist the displaced. Gonsalves said two other Carnival company ships were on their way. Barbados and Saint Lucia have already offered hospitality.
