The 2021 national U17 men’s and women’s basketball finals ended in Changzhi, Shanxi and Luohe, Henan respectively. Qingdao Guoxin Haitian team and Hunan U17 team with Yali Middle School won the championship respectively. Under the background of the integration of sports and education, this event has become an excellent stage for the U17 age group of sports system and education system teams to compete on the same field. The teams of the two development models are going all out and showing their abilities.

This event is co-sponsored by the Chinese Basketball Association and the China Middle School Sports Association. According to the statistics of the Youth Department of the Chinese Basketball Association, there are 47 and 24 men’s and women’s preliminaries, respectively, of which 19 and 9 teams from the education system, accounting for about 40%. Among the 16 men’s and women’s teams in the final stage, there were 6 and 7 teams from the school respectively.

The Qingdao Guoxin Haitian Team, which won the men’s championship, is the echelon of the Qingdao Guoxin Club of the Chinese Men’s Basketball Professional League (CBA), and is also a typical youth training team from the sports system. Since taking over the Qingdao Club in 2017, Guoxin Group has increased its investment in youth training. In 2019, it invited CBA star Xu Changsuo to take charge of echelon construction. Just two years after Xu Changsuo took office, he led his team to win the national U17 championship for the first time, creating the history of the club.

Xu Changsuo, who has been deeply involved in basketball youth training for many years, told reporters that Qingdao Guoxin’s U17 team can make great progress in a short period of time, first of all, thanks to the attention of the group and the club and the good logistical support. For example, he said that after he took office, the daily food standard for athletes rose from 60 yuan to 100 yuan, and the nutrition of young athletes was guaranteed. Secondly, it is more systematic and hard training. At present, this team has training every morning and afternoon in addition to the cultural class study on Sunday morning and Thursday morning. There is also 1 hour shooting training in the evening. The average daily training volume is about 6 hours.

According to Xu Changsuo, the team’s cultural study on Thursday morning focused on basketball knowledge, English, etiquette, and traditional Chinese culture. The children were mainly taught the knowledge that they would need to develop around basketball in the future. He said that he believes that these children who have received hard training will be able to “find a bowl of rice to eat” through basketball in the future. Qingdao Guoxin Club currently has 3 echelons and will expand to 5 in the future. These children will be diverted when they are 17-19 years old. The more talented children will be sent to the club’s first team or other teams. The less prominent ones can go to study in sports colleges that cooperate with the club.

Xu Changsuo said that the main goal of the Qingdao Guoxin Haitian Club echelon is to cultivate high-level basketball talents. Like Yang Hansen, who scored 24 points and 12 rebounds in the finals this time, he will be a professional player in the future.

In this U17 men’s basketball semi-final, the U17 echelon of the CBA League champion Guangdong Hongyuan team lost to the Tsinghua High School Men’s Basketball Team. In last year’s Spark Cup competition, they also lost to the Tsinghua Affiliated Squadron. Qu Shaobin, the head coach of the Guangdong Hongyuan Youth Team, told reporters that this time the Guangdong team came for the championship and it was a pity to lose to the Tsinghua Affiliated Middle School. On the whole, this competition basically represents the highest level of this age group. More than 90% of the outstanding players of the right age have come, and only a small number of teams from Zhejiang and other teams born in 2004 will participate in the future.

In Qu Shaobin’s view, the high-level teams in the education system are already very competitive. The calm and oldness of the student players on the court dwarfs the players of the professional echelon, which left a deep impression on him. Qu Shaobin believes that the opportunity to participate in this situation is an important factor. After the national U17 tournament was opened to school teams in the original sports system, the opportunities for high-level school teams to participate increased. Counting the provincial, municipal and national competitions in the education system, some teams can play 50 or 60 games each year. In contrast, teams such as the Guangdong Hongyuan Youth Team can only participate in sports system competitions. There are about ten or twenty games a year, which to a large extent caused the gap between the two sides in terms of competition experience. Qu Shaobin’s summary is: teams in the sports system lack “matches” and teams in the education system lack “practice”.

Qu Shaobin believes that another factor in the improvement of the school team’s level is the selection advantage. Qu Shaobin has been in charge of the Hongyuan Youth Team for some time. In recent years, when selecting talents, he discovered that a common concern of parents is: If children come to play with you, how to solve the problem of going to school? Some parents clearly told him that Tsinghua High School, Shenyang No. 2 High School or other traditional basketball schools also took a fancy to their children. Because of this, the Guangdong Hongyuan Team has also increased the integration of sports and education, and has cooperated with Guangdong Experimental Middle School since 2019. In last year’s national U15 men’s basketball match, the Guangdong Experimental Middle School team won the championship.

“We have just started recruiting first-year junior students in 19, and now those children were born in 2006, 2007, and 2008. They go to school during the day and are trained by a professional team from Guangdong Hongyuan after class. They have the talents of several outside players. Yes, from the perspective of development potential, it may be better than some members of the Hongyuan echelon who were born in 2004 and 2005,” Qu Shaobin said.

Among the teams that entered the top four men’s basketball teams, Tsinghua Affiliated Middle School and Beijing No. 4 Middle School (in the name of Beijing Xicheng Sports School) are two strong teams from ordinary middle schools. Everyone knows the dominance of Tsinghua High School in the domestic high school basketball field, and the Beijing Fourth Squadron has also achieved good results in the practice of integrating sports and education. Li Bing, the head coach of the Beijing No. 4 Basketball Team, told reporters that the cooperation with Xicheng Sports School has given the team more opportunities to participate. From March this year to the present, the team’s competition has basically not stopped. The rich experience of the game has greatly improved the children’s ability to handle the ball on the court.

According to Li Bing, the children of the Beijing No. 4 Basketball Team go to class with the children in the ordinary class. The school is very tight on learning. Every day after school, 16:15 to 19:00 is the team’s training time. Different from ordinary students, the children of the basketball team will do homework or ask the teacher for questions in the culture class during the physical education class.

Li Bing believes that when the training time is not as good as that of the club echelon, the school team must work hard on training efficiency. Generally speaking, the players’ development in basketball is not too delayed. Among the players selected for the latest Chinese men’s basketball training list, Qi Lin, Zhu Mingzhen and Wang Quanze are all players from Beijing No. 4 Middle School. The transfer ratio is higher than that of the average CBA club. Currently, the Beijing No. 4 Basketball Team has a total of 5 coaches, including 1 physical coach, whose support ability is much better than before.

The relevant person of the Chinese Basketball Association said that from the current point of view, the sports system is still the main force in talent training, and the team of the education system is also playing an increasing role. Some sports schools and clubs participating in this competition generally reflect the difficulty of enrollment. The reason is that parents have some concerns about the talent training model of sports schools and clubs, and they think that it is difficult for their children to find ideal jobs in society if they cannot join the professional team. Most parents believe that their children have a comprehensive college diploma and have a wider career path, especially for girls. The top few ordinary schools in the U17 women’s basketball game are dominant, which also illustrates the parents’ choice from the side.

Zhao Junjie, director of the Competition Management and Development Department of the China Middle School Sports Association, said that through the integration of sports and education, encouraging a group of strong school teams to participate in the national U series competitions and exchanges and discussions with the sports system teams are very meaningful for improving the level of school basketball. The competitions sponsored by the China Sports Association will also set up a secondary vocational team, which will gradually be opened to sports schools.

“Because of the large number of school teams across the country, the level of unevenness, the capacity of the national competition is limited, many school teams did not have the opportunity to participate in the regional and national competitions. According to the current development status of school basketball, the China Sports Association is doing competitions. The hierarchical and hierarchical systemic reform also provides substantial guarantee for the integration of sports and education. The integration of sports and education requires an overall top-level design, rather than a big pot of stacking. At which level the teams of the school and the sports school are suitable Integration is also a gradual exploration in the competition. Therefore, we want to start with an invitational tournament like the Spark Cup, and gradually find a suitable integration method, and then proceed as a whole, step by step, so that more teams from the sports system can participate in the education system. In the recent games, we have effectively promoted the integration of sports and education in basketball,” said Zhao Junjie.
