Bologna, 21 April 2022 – “The decision made by Wimbledon is madness”. Novak Djokovic he expressed himself bluntly, as he usually does, on the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian tennis players from the 2022 edition of the tournament of Wimbledondecided by the organizers of the Slam. The number 1 in the world went against the position of the British, who in support ofUkraine have decreed the veto of participation of athletes from the Russiainvading state of the territory ruled by Zelensky, and by Belarusa nation that supports the military maneuvers of Vladimir Putin.
Djokovic: “Politics must not interfere with sport”
Novak Djokovic stated that they understand the delicate international situation, but at the same time does not accept the choice of Wimbledon: “I will always condemn war. I will never support it, because I myself am a child of war. I know what emotional trauma it leaves: in Serbia and nei BALKANS we have had a lot of conflicts in the last few years. But I can’t agree with the Wimbledon decision, which I believe to be a folly. When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good. “
Those of the Serbian are, undoubtedly, words that will cause discussion, but which follow the thought ofATP and of WTA, that is the two male and female professional tennis circuits. They too took Wimbledon’s stance harmful and unjust, as athletes must be able to participate in sporting events on the basis of merit and without discrimination of any kind.
