Wolfsburg gets big points against Bochum

As of: April 20, 2024 6:23 p.m

VfL Wolfsburg narrowly prevailed against VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga basement duel on Saturday afternoon (April 20, 2024) and thus secured an extremely important victory in the relegation battle.

Jonas Wind scored the goal of the day for the hosts shortly before half-time, which was enough for a 1-0 (1-0) victory. Thanks to their success, the Wolves have moved somewhat clear of the relegation zone and are five points clear of the relegation place. The Wolves now have a whopping nine points compared to Cologne, which occupies the first direct relegation spot.

Bochum, on the other hand, is still in acute danger of relegation in 15th place. Mainz, currently in relegation place 16, can still overtake them on Sunday – a draw against Freiburg would be enough for Mainz.

“We are of course disappointed,” said Bochum coach Heiko Butscher at the Sportschau microphone after the game. “Wolfsburg has completely accepted the fight. We tried everything, invested everything, but again it wasn’t enough. We have to work on our effectiveness.”

Wind finally hits again – 10th goal of the season

Wolfsburg immediately went forward and pushed for an early lead. A header from Sebastiaan Bornauw just missed the goal (10th). After a quarter of an hour, the guests loosened their grip a little and had longer periods of possession of the ball. Patrick Osterhage missed the first opportunity (28th).

Wolfsburg was now increasingly losing track of things. Goalkeeper Pavao Pervan prevented Takuma Asano from falling behind (32′). Osterhage also scored from an offside position (39′).

The lead shortly before half-time came as a surprise. The disorganized Bochum defense couldn’t clear the ball and Wind scored his tenth goal of the season. It was a relief for the striker: Wind had last scored in November and then went 17 games without a goal.

Bochum too harmless offensively

The hosts almost extended their fortunate half-time lead immediately after the restart. But Tiago Tomas found his match in goalkeeper Manuel Riemann (46th). As a result, both teams lacked a clear playing line. The importance of the encounter was evident to the teams.

Bochum struggled offensively but suddenly had a great chance to equalize. But Philipp Hofmann headed just wide from close range (71′). Wolfsburg trembled towards the final whistle – and was able to celebrate at the end. “A very important victory,” said Hasenhüttl after the game – but looked straight ahead: “We still have a way to go, the next two games will also be key games for us.”

Bochum at home against Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg in Freiburg

VfL Bochum welcomes TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (Friday, April 26th, 8:30 p.m.), VfL Wolfsburg plays away against SC Freiburg (Saturday, April 27th, 3:30 p.m.).
