The Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (Berchtesgaden/Königssee) were unable to take advantage of their minimal chance of winning the overall World Cup in the toboggan doubles. The German duo raced to second place at the World Cup final in Sigulda, Latvia. However, that wasn’t enough to catch the leaders Thomas Steu/Wolfgang Kindl.

After nine races this season, Bayern were 81 points behind the Austrians, who came third in Sigulda (+0.386 seconds). Victory in the last race of the season went to local heroes Martins Bots/Roberts Plume; after two runs, the Latvians’ lead over Wendl/Arlt was only 0.095 seconds.

Positive balance of the season: “Second place makes us proud”

The two 36-year-olds, who had won the big crystal ball last year, drew a positive conclusion to the season: “Second place in the world makes us incredibly proud. We have ourselves to blame for it this year,” said Wendl, who announced to also compete with its namesake next winter. It will be the 18th season for the double-seater duo.

“We’re looking forward to Patric Leitner. We like driving, that’s our passion,” said Wendl. Leitner will succeed long-time national coach Norbert Loch next season.

The other German starters missed the podium on Saturday. Hannes Orlamünder/Paul Gubitz (Schwarza/Zella-Mehlis) finished fifth (+0.711), Moritz Jäger/Valentin Steudte (Zella-Mehlis/Suhl) came tenth (+0.991). Wendl/Arlt took third place at the World Championships in Altenberg.
