Zverev triumphs at the ATP finals in Turin: he is the 2021 Maestro

by admin

He is the number 3 in the world, Alexander Zverev, the winner of the ATP Finals in Turin and 2021 tennis master. With a double and peremptory 6-4 he won in an hour and a quarter against Daniil Medvedev, reigning champion and one step higher than him in the world rankings. The German thus confirmed his excellent moment, after the success against Nole Djokovic in the semifinal (hard-fought and qualitatively high: in some ways the real final of the tournament).

In the last point of the match there is the figure of the entire challenge: an ace scored with the second ball, with which Zverev closed a match dominated thanks above all to the very powerful serve. The numbers tell it well: 8 aces (against the opponent’s 3), 82% of points won on the first ball (against 73%), 57% of points won on the second (against 54%). Beyond the blow on which his game is based, Zverev from the beginning appeared more “inside” the match, always careful to effectively neutralize the solutions attempted by Medvedev, who attacked, varied with some dampened and unsheathed some winning but overall he seemed subdued and always “out” of the match. He suffered the two breaks that condemned him to defeat at the beginning of the two sets (the first time at 2 to 1, and then at the opening of the second), with Zverev never in danger of being reached and always safe in his lunges. The German thus interrupted the series of consecutive defeats inflicted on him by the number two of the world: five, including the last one in Turin, in the elimination round last Tuesday.

2021 was a great year for the German, who won tournaments in Acapulco, Madrid, Cincinnati and Vienna, took Olympic gold in Tokyo and now the ATP finals (with a prize of $ 2,143,000 and 1300 points). He still lacks a Grand Slam (unlike Medvedev who had beaten Djokovic in the final at the US Open). Meanwhile, the German enjoys the victory in Turin, a city he greeted with a real declaration of love, during the award ceremony: “In London – where the finals were played for 12 years and won in 2018, ed – it was incredible, but I think Italy has overcome it ”, said, in front of a smiling Andrea Gaudenzi, president of the ATP. “I love Italy, playing here, what makes it special are the fans, crazy about tennis. Rome is one of my favorite tournaments, but Turin has exceeded my expectations ”.

The finals under the Mole meet in 2022, after a more than positive debut at Pala Alpitour and the awareness of a growing Italian tennis, which will have a lot to say. 2021 gave us Matteo Berrettini number 7 in the world, champion at Queen’s and in Belgrade and finalist at Wimbledon (where he lost to Djokovic); the five titles and the final at the Masters 1000 in Miami by Jannik Sinner (without forgetting the brilliant tests with Hurkacz and Medvedev at the ATP finals), Camila Giorgi victorious in the Masters 1000 in Montreal. And now we are waiting for Davis, again in Turin, on 26 and 27 November.
