Apple CEO Tim Cook Warns Users of Mercenary Spyware Attacks

Apple issued alert notifications to users in 92 countries, warning them of potential “mercenary spyware attacks” as critical elections approach in several nations. The update was made on Apple’s website, with notifications designed to assist users who may have been individually targeted by such attacks.

Indian media outlets reported that iPhone users in the country received notifications alerting them of attempts to compromise their devices remotely. The notifications emphasized that the attacks were specific to the user’s identity or profession, urging them to take the threat seriously.

Notably, these notifications have been received in 150 countries since 2021, according to Apple. This is not the first instance of such warnings, as similar notifications were sent to prominent Indian political leaders in October.

Rahul Gandhi, leader of India’s main opposition party, along with other political figures, received notifications indicating state-sponsored attackers were targeting their iPhones. While Gandhi accused the government of being behind the attacks, Apple did not attribute them to a specific state-sponsored entity.

Further investigations by Amnesty International confirmed the use of NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware in the attacks. Despite Indian authorities denying involvement, reports suggest pressure on Apple to provide alternative explanations for the warnings to users.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, users are advised to seek assistance from cybersecurity experts in case of such alerts. Apple’s efforts to notify and protect users from potential spyware attacks are ongoing, emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant in the digital age.
