(Stuttgart) – The Science2Start ideas competition is being held for the 15th time and honors ideas from scientists and founders from the STERN BioRegion that, in the opinion of a jury of experts, have particular economic potential. Participation is worth it; Since 2009, over 150 ideas have been submitted and numerous prizes have been awarded. In total, almost 40 start-ups have emerged so far, dealing, among other things, with ophthalmology, sewage treatment plant analysis, exoskeletons and chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Founders can apply to BioRegio STERN Management GmbH from now until May 15, 2024. On February 8, 2024, there was an opportunity to find out more in advance at the 10th Startup:con Tübingen.

Over 150 ideas were submitted in the past 14 competitions; almost a third were able to convince the jury. BioRegio STERN Managing Director Dr. Klaus Eichenberg: “I am very pleased that almost 40 start-ups have emerged from this competition so far – and that some of these start-ups are already very successful.” This includes Mireca Medicines GmbH from Tübingen, which produces medicines for the treatment of certain incurable eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. BlueLab Wasseranalysesysteme GmbH, also from Tübingen, offers an automated and rapid measuring system for detecting legionella. The Cytolytics GmbH team in Tübingen is working on a modular software platform that, based on state-of-the-art machine learning methods and algorithms, enables fully automated evaluation of medical data. Cellendes GmbH from Reutlingen is already very successfully producing biomimetic hydrogels for the design of a cell-typically suitable matrix for 3D cell culture. Variolytics GmbH from Stuttgart has brought an analysis platform onto the market that, among other things, enables operators of sewage treatment plants to save energy and minimize the emission of environmentally harmful gases. “noac” comes from Hellstern medical GmbH in Wannweil in the Reutlingen district: the world‘s first exoskeleton that uses intelligent motion capture to hold surgeons in any desired position at the operating table. And the founder of Tübingen-based IntegraSkin GmbH has set out to revolutionize dermatological diagnostics by using artificial intelligence and innovative molecular biological methods to determine thousands of disease-relevant parameters and thus find the right, personalized therapy for chronic inflammatory skin diseases.

The Stuttgart-based Dispendix GmbH, Science2Start winner from the very beginning in 2009, has specialized in the development of non-contact liquid handling solutions for the life sciences industry. Your co-founder Andreas Traube is convinced that he has benefited enormously from this success: “As a young researcher, starting a company was at best a vague dream for me. Science2Start showed me that such a dream can be realized, that it is worth taking the path and definitely gave me the initial initial motivation to build the later Dispendix.” Also Dr. Sven Schnichels from the Tübingen University Eye Clinic is enthusiastic about the offer from BioRegio STERN Management GmbH: “The Science2Start ideas competition is a great start for potential founders to make valuable contacts and further develop ideas.” Together with his team, he was selected for “nano -I-drops” award. The effectiveness of eye drops should be optimized with the help of nanoparticles that are obtained from natural substances and can therefore be absorbed particularly well by the eye.
