Now it’s official: Lionsgate released the first trailer for the upcoming video game adaptation “Borderlands” yesterday. This means that another video game is finding its way into cinemas.

Fans of the successful loot shooter from developer Gearbox Software can look forward to a reunion with characters like Lilith, Tiny Tina and of course the robot Claptrap. Lionsgate released the first trailer with plenty of action and quirky humor.

However, the film adaptation is not a 1:1 adaptation of one of the games from the Borderlands series. The film gets its very own story. At the center of the action is Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett.

This is what it’s about: Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home of Pandora. Your mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the most powerful SOB in the universe. In the process, she forges an unexpected alliance with a colorful bunch of loners. These include Roland, a skilled mercenary on a personal mission; Tiny Tina, an untamed, prepubescent explosives expert; Krieg, Tina’s muscle-bound protector; Tannis, the quirky scientist who has seen it all; and Claptrap, a cheeky robot. Now these unlikely heroes must team up to face an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets.

In addition to Cate Blanchett, other Hollywood greats are among the cast of the Borderlands film adaptation. Kevin Hart plays mercenary Roland, while Ariana Greenblatt takes on the role of the eccentric “explosives expert” Tiny Tina. Florian Munteanu plays her protector Krieg and Jamie Lee Curtis plays the scientist Tannis. Jack Black also voices the smart-ass robot Claptrap in the English original. Directed by Eli Roth. The film was actually shot in 2021, but some scenes still had to be re-shot in 2023. The cinema release in Germany is August 8th, 2024.
