Mother 3’s dad (and uncle Reggie): Just ask Nintendo

After years of clamoring from fans, it was announced that Mother 3 will finally be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online service. However, there is a catch – the game will only be available for the Japanese console, leaving Western audiences once again without a localized version of the popular RPG.

Fans have been petitioning for a Western release of Mother 3 for nearly two decades, with their pleas growing louder and more frequent in the age of social media. Despite their best efforts, series creator Shigesato Itoi has distanced himself from the project, redirecting fans to Nintendo for any localization requests.

Even former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé, known for his witty banter with fans, has been bombarded with requests for Mother 3 localization. Fils-Aimé famously teased fans with a “talk to me in a year” comment at the Switch launch event, only for the game’s Western release to never materialize.

With the decision to keep Mother 3 exclusive to Japan now out of his hands, Fils-Aimé has transitioned from teasing fans to acknowledging that the fate of Mother 3 outside of Japan is “no longer mine either.” It seems that, for now, fans of the beloved RPG will have to continue waiting and hoping for a localized release in their region.
