New mini electric car should be approved for teenagers

The Swiss company Micro has become known for its electric city vehicle “Microlino”. The tiny vehicles, which have a top speed of 90 km/h and a range of up to 230 kilometers, are intended to enable comfortable and sustainable urban exploration. Now the company is launching a new, even smaller model, the Microlino Lite, which even teenagers can drive.

Driving Microlino Lite is permitted from the age of 15

The new variant of the citymobile belongs to the vehicle class L6e (light four-wheeled vehicles), reports heise. This means that, unlike the previous version, you can drive the Microlino Lite with a class AM driving license, which 15-year-olds can acquire in Germany and Austria. The Microlino Lite should be able to travel at a maximum speed of 45 km/h. The engine has a peak output of 9 kW. With a fully charged lithium-ion battery, the city mobile should have a basic range of 100 kilometers, which can be extended to 180 km.

The new teenage citymobile should have space for two people and the trunk has a capacity of 230 liters. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle is the first vehicle in its class to have a self-supporting steel body, which is intended to improve safety and driving behavior. The Microlino Lite is 2.5 m long, 1.5 m wide and 1.5 m high. The E-Citymobile is expected to go on sale next summer.

“New product category between bicycles and cars”

Micro’s vehicles are not only available for purchase, but also in a leasing model. At least the latter also applies to the Lite model. In Switzerland, the starting price is 149 francs (around 155 euros) per month for a term of 48 months. However, no further price information is currently available, and it is still unclear whether the model will go on sale. The development of the Microlino began in 2015, and Micro introduced the pre-production model around six years ago. A good five years later, the Swiss manufacturer brought the mobile onto the market.

“When we introduced the original Microlino, the idea was to create a new product category between bikes and cars. It’s a bit like an iPad, not a laptop and not a smartphone, but something in between. And why? Because most cars are simply far too big for what they are used for,” says Oliver Oubotor, Micro’s COO, in an interview with TopGear. The mini-vehicles should not only be much more practical, but also have a smaller ecological footprint.

The model was “bubble cars” from the 50s

According to Oubotor, the inspiration for Microlino was the “bubble cars” from the 1950s, such as the Heinkel cabin from Germany. A special feature of the new citymobile is its door. This is not on the side, but in the front. “The Lite is currently the only car in the world with a front door, which we installed solely to enable perpendicular parking. The construction was definitely a challenge, but it means the owners can step out directly onto the sidewalk,” said the COO.
