Physical tracers: 100% transparency in the origin of gemstones

The Munich company CEYLONS | As a pioneer, MUNICH relies on the traceability of its gemstones through the “Provenance Proof Physical Tracer” secured by blockchain technology, thereby setting new standards for transparency and security

– Complete transparency of origin for gemstones with “Physical Tracer”: A completely traceable supply chain is guaranteed from the mine to the polished gemstone

– Innovative marking technology using synthetic DNA for unique identification: “Provenance Proof” has developed a tracer specifically for gemstones, permanent coding using nano-particles

– Blockchain technology for security: All important information about the gemstone is stored in the digital blockchain in an irrevocable and forgery-proof manner

– Market launch at INHORGENTA MUNICH: The first physically marked sapphires will be presented at the trade fair from February 16th to February 19th, 2024

– Premiere of the first jewelry collection: VIERI Fine Jewelery presents the first 100% traceable jewelry collection in Germany with traceable sapphires

Transparency in jewelry and gemstones not only reflects today’s zeitgeist, but is also essential for the future. Customers want to know where their gemstones come from and under what conditions they were mined. Unfortunately, this cannot usually be said reliably because gemstones pass through many hands. Traders trade in raw stones and polished gemstones. Through various levels of trade, the gemstones are resold in ever larger batches until they usually reach international trading centers in India or Thailand and from there are sold to goldsmiths, jewelers and jewelry designers via exporters and wholesalers.

The key is reliable transparency and traceability. This can only be guaranteed if you carry out the mining and further processing processes yourself in the gemstone’s country of origin, without any intermediaries. “Transparency in gemstones is the basis for sustainability. Ecological gemstone mining and ethically fair trade with the participation of local mining communities is our DNA and mission that we work on every day,” explains Leander Schorr from CEYLONS | MUNICH.

Gemstones are marked by physical tracers

Using the innovative technology from the Swiss company “Provenance Proof”, our gemstones are provided with tiny tracers under strict supervision. These tracers contain a synthetic DNA at their center, which is exclusive to our stones. These nano-particles do not change the gemstone and are invisible to the human eye and to microscopes in gemological laboratories. They are resistant to alteration and cleaning processes and can be safely deciphered forever to confidently confirm the origin of the gemstones. The DNA is re-identified and decoded through the analysis of a quantitative PCR test (qPCR). This is a standard method for reading DNA.

Information stored in DNA is stored securely, such as: B. the identity of the actor who attached the physical tracer, the mining location, the mining period as well as further processing steps of the grinding and all other stations of the trade. This technology offers maximum security and reliability. The tracers make it possible to check the origin of the gemstone at any time and ensure traceability. This is a quantum leap for maximum transparency. Each marked gemstone also receives a “Certificate of Provenance” from Provenance Proof.

“Years of development were necessary to best develop the physical DNA tracers for gemstones and integrate them with the Provenance Proof blockchain. It has always been our vision to enable more transparency and traceability in the gemstone and jewelry industry through the use of modern technologies. We congratulate our partners like CEYLONS | MUNICH who have a direct, transparent and traceable supply chain, which is currently still a novelty in the gemstone trade, and are happy to support your visions. That’s exactly why we developed our technologies!” reports Klemens Klink, Managing Director of Provenance Proof.

Blockchain technology stores data irreversibly

All important information about the origin of the gemstone is stored independently, digitally and irrevocably on the Provenance Proof blockchain. This creates a forgery-proof digital twin, which is passed on with the gemstone to the end customer. This means that the future owner knows which mine the gemstone comes from and gains exciting insights into the working conditions on site, its transport route and the entire processing and production history. The blockchain also provides information on all important gemstone criteria, such as: B. Carat weight, color, shape and treatment. This is the world‘s first and safest method to create transparency for the gemstone value chain.

CEYLON | For the first time, MUNICH is offering its fine and fairly traded sapphires from sustainable mining in Sri Lanka with the physical tracer at INHORGENTA in Munich. “Every sapphire has been documented internally for a long time. What is new is the marking using liquid DNA, secured by blockchain technology for complete traceability,” reports Dr. Peter Janowski from CEYLONS | MUNICH. “As the first sapphire producer and wholesaler in Europe, almost our entire portfolio is transparent and traceable – 100% of our Ceylon sapphires already come from sustainable mining in Sri Lanka,” adds Leander Schorr.

VIERI Fine Jewelery presents its first jewelry collection with traceable sapphires

The jewelry label VIERI from Berlin uses marked Ceylon sapphires with a physical tracer from “Provenance Proof” for its “Charms Collection” to ensure absolute reliability and transparency. Founder and owner Guya Merkle emphasizes: “For us, this is not only a step more towards the transparency of our work, but also into the digital future. We believe that true beauty can only exist in a world where not only is there no suffering or destruction associated with the creation of our products, but also where improvements to current major challenges are created. The physical tracer combined with blockchain technology allows us to further develop this vision and offer our customers a 100% transparent shopping experience. That’s why we are particularly grateful and happy with CEYLONS | “MUNICH has found a reliable partner who can guarantee the origin and sustainable mining conditions of its gemstones.”
