Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to Break Away from ARM Architecture with Nuvia Phoenix

In a groundbreaking move, Qualcomm is set to release its latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, in October 2024, breaking away from the traditional ARM architecture and opting for the new Nuvia Phoenix. This shift marks a significant departure from the standard smartphone processor design and has tech enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the performance and power consumption improvements that may come with this change.

Nuvia, the company behind the Phoenix architecture, was founded in 2019 by former Apple A-series chip designers, including Gerard Williams III, Manu Gulati, and John Bruno. Qualcomm acquired Nuvia in 2021 for $1.4 billion, with the goal of developing a new architecture that could differentiate its processors from others still using ARM designs.

Rumored to be built on TSMC’s 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will feature two Nuvia Phoenix L performance cores and six Nuvia Phoenix M medium-sized cores. The GPU will be the new Adreno 740, along with upgraded Spectra ISP and Hexagon DSP components. This hardware combination is set to provide a significant performance boost and offer a departure from the ARM-only ecosystem.

While leaked information suggests a maximum performance of 4.3GHz, the official release is expected to cap at 3.8GHz due to heat dissipation and energy consumption concerns. Comparisons with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 show promising results for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, but the actual performance will be clearer once the processor hits the market.

Although details are still scarce and official benchmark scores are yet to be confirmed, the anticipation around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with Nuvia Phoenix is high. Tech enthusiasts and smartphone users will have to wait until October 2024 to experience the potential game-changing capabilities of this new processor design.
