On March 4, 2024, astronomers made an exciting discovery in our solar system. Three new moons were found, with one orbiting Uranus and two orbiting Neptune. The announcement was made by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center after the small moons were spotted using powerful telescopes in Hawaii and Chile.

This brings the total number of known moons around Neptune to 16 and around Uranus to 28. One of Neptune’s new moons has the longest orbital journey yet, taking approximately 27 years to complete one lap around the icy planet. The new moon around Uranus is estimated to have a diameter of just 5 miles, making it likely the smallest of the planet’s moons.

These discoveries shed new light on the outer reaches of our solar system and add to our understanding of the diverse moons that orbit the gas giants. The astronomers involved in the discovery are thrilled by the findings and continue to study these distant celestial bodies for further insights into our cosmic neighborhood.
