A team of researchers led by Miao Zhao, from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, has made a groundbreaking technological breakthrough in the field of data storage. The team has developed a new method of optical data storage (ODS) using light in three dimensions, which has the potential to revolutionize the way data is stored and managed.

This innovative technology has the capability to store petabytes of information on a single optical disk. For context, a petabyte is equivalent to approximately one quadrillion bytes, allowing for the storage of up to one million average-quality movies on a single drive. The method devised by Zhao and his team involves creating an optical recording medium using a photoresist film with an induced emission dye that can be activated by femtosecond laser beams.
