Endiatx Launches PillBot, a Revolutionary Capsule Robot for Gastrointestinal Diagnosis

In the United States, when individuals experience gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal discomfort, the traditional process involves consulting a medical professional, queuing for blood drawing and ultrasound, and eventually undergoing a gastroscopy to determine a diagnosis and receive treatment. Unfortunately, for some patients, by the time gastric cancer is discovered, it may be too late for effective treatment.

In an effort to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, Endiatx, a groundbreaking start-up company, has spent the last five years developing a pill-sized robot known as PillBot. This innovative technology aims to replace the traditional endoscope machine and provide a more efficient and minimally invasive solution for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal conditions.

According to Endiatx, a patient dies from gastric cancer and related diseases approximately every 39 seconds, highlighting the urgent need for more effective diagnostic tools. The company’s PillBot is designed to actively check the entire gastrointestinal tract in real-time through a system platform developed by Endiatx and a wireless controller provided by Microsoft Xbox.

The PillBot, which has won the prestigious Edison Award, is the world‘s first publicly released capsule robot. It features a lens, LED light set, laser light, data conversion module, battery pack, and a special drive motor in a transparent capsule slightly larger than an ordinary pill. The development team at Endiatx faced numerous challenges in ensuring that the PillBot could achieve the same resolution as a gastroscope and provide medical-level effects in a compact space. Through the use of SOLLIDWORKS, they were able to overcome these obstacles.

Thomas Silva, a product development engineer at Endiatx, emphasized that the PillBot has entered the in vivo experimental stage. The company’s ultimate goal is to enable remote medical treatment, allowing surgeons to collect specimens from patients and even perform minimally invasive surgeries remotely. The team also anticipates that future iterations of the PillBot will be able to collect samples from affected areas of the body and assist in detecting diseases such as pancreatic cancer at an early stage.

The development and release of PillBot by Endiatx represent a significant advancement in the field of medical technology, offering hope for more effective diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
