Massive, Ancient Galaxy Discovered with Stars Four Times the Mass of the Milky Way

Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery, uncovering an ancient and massive galaxy that challenges existing models of the universe. The galaxy, designated ZF-UDS-7329, contains stars four times the mass of the Milky Way.

The international research team, led by distinguished professor Karl Glazebrook from Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology, used the James Webb Space Telescope to observe ZF-UDS-7329, which dates back to 11.5 billion years ago.

This discovery has overturned existing theories about the formation of galaxies. Scientists previously believed that the formation of massive galaxies in the early stages of the universe would decrease significantly. However, the observation of ZF-UDS-7329 has upended these theoretical models.

“We’ve been tracking this particular galaxy for seven years,” Glazebrook said. “We looked at it for hours with two of the largest telescopes on Earth to find out how old it was. But it was too red and too faint. We couldn’t measure it. In the end, we had to leave Earth and use the Webb Space Telescope to confirm its nature.”

Dr. Themiya Nanayakkara, responsible for the spectral analysis of the Webb Space Telescope data, explained that this research breaks the boundaries of astronomers’ current understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies.

Associate Professor Claudia Lagos of the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research also played a key role in establishing a theoretical model of the evolution of dark matter concentration. She explained that the emergence of these extremely massive galaxies so early in the universe poses a major challenge to the standard model of cosmology.

The research results were published in the journal Nature on February 14. This groundbreaking discovery is expected to open new doors for understanding the physics of dark matter and the formation of galaxies in the early universe.
