What is that? How to activate or deactivate?

Smartphone manufacturers are looking for various methods to extend battery life and lifespan. The “adaptive charging” feature can help with this. How does it work and how can it be activated or deactivated again?

Adaptive charging is available on Google Pixel smartphones starting with the Pixel 4. The function is intended to prevent the battery from overcharging if you leave the device plugged in overnight, for example.

What is “adaptive charging”?

If the option is activated, the charging speed depends on a set alarm or general charging habits. For example, if you set an alarm for 9:00 a.m. and plug the smartphone into the charger before going to bed, the battery will slowly charge so that it is full an hour before the set alarm time. This applies as long as you plug the device into a charger between 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. and an alarm time between 3:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. is activated. This prevents possible overcharging of the battery, which shortens its lifespan.

Devices newer than the Pixel 4 run the adaptive charging function even independent of a time of day or alarm. The operating system then “learns” the charging habits and automatically adjusts charging speeds accordingly. Google states that it takes around 14 daysuntil the system has internalized the charging habits. This refers to everyday life. Adaptive charging may not work when traveling or for users who do not have a routine daily routine.

How do you enable or disable adaptive charging?

By default, the feature is enabled on Pixel devices. If “adaptive charging” is running, you can see in the notification window how long it will take until the battery is full. If you want the battery to charge quickly in the evening or if you don’t want to use adaptive charging at all, you can deactivate the function:

Call them for that Settings of your Pixel smartphone. Control the area “battery pack“.Here you will find the menu for “Adaptives Laden“.Disables the option “Use adaptive charging“.

If you only want to switch off the function once for an ongoing charging process, use the button “Disable this time” in the notification window.
