Based on information from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and other foreign media, 751 unmarked cemeteries have been discovered near the site of an Indian boarding school in Canada. Just a few weeks ago, near the site of the Kamloops Indian Boarding School in British Columbia, Canada, an unmarked cemetery with 215 child remains was also found.
According to reports, the newly discovered cemetery is located at the former Maryvale boarding school in Saskatchewan. This Indian boarding school was established in 1899 until it closed in 1997 and is managed by the local Catholic Church. In the 1970s, the cemetery of this school was taken over by aboriginal tribes. The Cowessess First Nation said that determining the names of the buried will be the priority of the next step.
Reuters previously pointed out that between 1831 and 1996, the Canadian boarding school system forcibly stripped 150,000 Aboriginal children from their original families. The Canadian Reconciliation and Truth Commission issued an investigation report in 2015, stating that these children were generally abused, sexually assaulted and abused.
