A ‘third’ throws out Monaco

Monaco was eliminated in the round of 16 of the French Cup after losing on penalties in the match played at the Robert Diochon stadium by Rouen, from the third division of French football.

The match ended with a tie at one goal. Austrian Adi Hutter’s team was unable to stop Rouen from playing in the quarterfinals against Valenciennes, from Ligue 2.

Monaco, one of the favorites for the title, located every year at the top of the Ligue 1 standings, took the lead after half an hour with a penalty converted by the American Folarin Balogun but in the added time of the first half, Clement Bassin established the tie after receiving a ball from Valentin Sanson.

After ninety minutes the outcome was in the hands of penalties. Balogun had Monaco’s victory in hand. He executed the fifth. Mustapha Benzia had missed one for the home team and the visitors had scored four. The American could have sentenced. But he didn’t get it right. Afterwards, Rouen did not miss any more shots and Maghnes Akliouche wasted the seventh that Monaco took, which was eliminated.

The clash completed the round of 16. And Rouen joined Paris Saint Germain, Nice, Lyon, Strasbourg, Le Puy Pie, Stade Rennes and Valenciennes.
