According to US media reports, a train from the National Railway Passenger Corporation derailed in Montana on the afternoon of the 25th local time. The accident has caused at least 3 deaths and more than 50 injuries.
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation’s statement stated that the derailed train was the “Empire Builder 7/27” train between Seattle and Chicago. At about 16:00 that day, when approaching Joplin in central Montana, five carriages derailed. At that time, there were about 147 passengers and 13 crew members. The Associated Press reported that the scene of the accident was about 241 kilometers north of Helena, the capital of Montana, and about 48 kilometers from the border of the United States and Canada.
The New York Times reported that local police said that three people were confirmed dead. In an interview, Amanda Fricker, a disaster and emergency services coordinator in Hill County, Montana, said in an interview that “far more than” 50 people were injured.
Fricker said rescuers from six counties are rushing to the scene, and as many as five hospitals are on standby to receive the injured. She said that there are more medical helicopters on standby. All survivors have been rescued from the train and evacuated to two locations.
