A year without Stefano Carrer’s passion

by admin

Stefano Carrer, the victim of an accident during an excursion in the mountains of Val d’Intelvi, above Lake Como, left us a year ago.

The pandemic has upset the perception of time. After the first months of the first of many lockdowns, the American writer Joyce Carol Oates summed up in a tweet this sense of distortion caused by a sudden captivity: past days that seem like months, weeks that seem like years and weigh as such, she wrote.

It wasn’t like that with Stefano. One year is yesterday and the pain is a pain at close range: intense, like the one felt on Friday 22 May 2020, when the news of his disappearance arrived. Remembering this is not just a duty; however strange and paradoxical it may seem, it is also a pleasure.

Because talking about him, who worked at Sole 24 Ore for over 30 years and was also a correspondent from New York and Tokyo, brings us back to the qualities of a valuable journalist. Competence, specialization, but above all passion. Stefano was all three of these things put together. He loved the topics on which he was called to write, Japan and Southeast Asia in particular, and this love made the difference in his articles, in his numerous video services and in his approach to the profession: only such a strong push allows a journalist to become a witness of events and processes.

The tragedy of Fukushima, the most serious nuclear accident in history after Chernobyl, and of which we propose a report by Stefano on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary, had almost made it his own. As one person who had our colleague particularly close to heart said, Stefano always worked with “Kisha Damashi”, which translated from Japanese means “the spirit of the journalist”.
