Afghanistan, women protest in front of the presidential palace: “We must go back to work”

by admin

“Do not be afraid. We are together ”, we read on banners and placards that dozens of women carry up through the streets of Kabul. They walk with courage, and without burqa, towards the presidential palace of the capital to ask the Taliban that the rights, hardly won in the last 20 years, are respected.

Pending the announcement of the new government, which could take place in a few hours, the group of civil society activists publicly challenged Koranic students to claim the right to work, education and participation in the government. They did so with colorful clothes, big sunglasses and with only the hijab covering their heads, because they do not intend to disappear from public life as happened during the last Taliban government.

According to the US broadcaster Cnn, a video shows a brief clash between one of the demonstrators and a Taliban soldier: “Go away”, shouts the militiaman before the woman resumes shouting the slogans. Despite the promises of an inclusive government, the spokesperson for the group, Zabiullah Mujahid, during his interview with Republic had specified that women would not have held important roles in the new government and that “following the commandments of the Koran and under the law of the Sharia, women could, for example, work in ministries, in the police force or, for example, in the judiciary as assistants “.

But no society can progress without the active role of women. “This is why we need our political participation in the future government,” said the civil society activist Tarannom Saeedi to the Afghan broadcaster ToloNews during the protest. “After the formation of the Taliban government, all women must go back to work. We will not allow anyone to undermine the results obtained in the last twenty years”, added another protester. Shabana Tawana.

The demonstration in Kabul is not an isolated case, even yesterday dozens of women gathered in the city of Herat, in the west of the country, to fight together for their future. At the head of the procession, four girls carried a large banner: “No government can last long without the support of women. Our demands: the right to education and the right to work in all sectors”.

One of the protesters told the photo agency Getty Images that 20 years ago she was forced to lock herself up at home for the crime of being a student, and today the same risks happening. His fault? Being a teacher and a woman.
