Agnes Lee, a “dreamer” at the helm of one of America’s most prestigious student newspapers

by admin

NEW YORK – A “dreamer” at the helm of one of the most prestigious student newspapers in America. Yes, one of those children of illegal immigrants who arrived in America as children and never regularized, to whom in 2012 the Obama administration granted the opportunity to complete their studies and thus face a path of amnesty through the Dream Act. That “Daca” to which Donald Trump has given the assault on several occasions and now Joe Biden wants to restore and improve.

Agnes Lee, 26, arrived in Los Angeles, California two decades ago with her family from South Korea. Since she was a child, she learned to fear police and airports. The reason, however, he discovered when he grew up when he started applying in college and his mother had to admit: Agnes had never become “American”. Thanks to the “Dacas”, the brilliant Asian student still managed to access the prestigious university of Georgetown: where, to protect her parents, for a time she hid her condition from professors and classmates.

But then he began to fight for those in the same situation as him: brilliant students who, due to their status, even with a degree from one of the best universities in America, will not be able to have access to jobs in the courts and in government agencies, where only permanent residents are hired. Much appreciated by her colleagues, she was therefore chosen to lead the Georgetown Law Magazine, the law magazine of the prestigious university. First undocumented student to reach the duties of editor-in-chief: a high-profile role, considered the best student position in the law school. An appointment that marks another first: for the first time all the leading legal magazines of universities where law is studied are led by women.

Lee, for his part, is already committed to publishing articles devoted to regulations related to human and civil rights, based on the rigorous research of scholars at his university. He is well aware that he will not enjoy, at least for now, the advantages offered by the role to his colleagues: it usually leads, in fact, to a position of assistant to a federal judge. Hoping, over time, to change things.

Particularly applauding the nomination is legal writing professor Eun Hee Han according to whom the election of an immigrant and openly irregular student is a symbolic passage that sends Agnes’s colleagues a particularly important message to Lee’s colleagues and aspiring lawyers: more at a time when Congress is already considering new legislation that offers “Dreamers” preferential lanes to obtain citizenship and with that the same rights as all Americans.
