According to foreign media reports, members of the German center-left Social Democratic Party voted on the 4th to pass a joint cabinet formation agreement. With the passage of the agreement, Schultz, the prime minister of the Social Democratic Party, is expected to succeed Merkel as the new Chancellor of Germany next week.

According to reports, about 600 representatives of the Social Democratic Party voted for the joint cabinet formation agreement at the party congress held in Berlin on the 4th, and up to 98.8% voted for it, with only seven votes against it.

The two coalition parties of the Social Democratic Party, the Green Party and the Liberal Democratic Party, must also pass a joint cabinet agreement before the German Bundestag convenes on the 8th.

On November 24, after nearly two months of intense negotiations, the center-left Social Democratic Party, which won the highest approval rate in the German Bundestag election, finalized an agreement to form a cabinet with the Green Party and the Liberal Democratic Party.

According to Germany’s current electoral system and political party structure, it is difficult for a certain party to obtain the absolute majority of seats required for independent governance. Therefore, after the election results are announced, the political parties with the highest votes will discuss the possibility of forming a ruling coalition. The parties that decide to govern together will negotiate the candidates for the Federal Chancellor, cabinet personnel arrangements, policy directions and other issues, and finally issue a joint cabinet formation agreement.

After the agreement is reached, the new Bundestag will put the election of the prime minister on the agenda. In terms of procedures, the Prime Minister needs to be formally nominated by the President, and members of the Council shall vote. Since the party in power has an absolute majority of seats, its prime minister candidates generally pass the ballot smoothly.

The new German Bundestag will vote for a new Chancellor on December 8.
