Authorities seized a 340-kilogram, 3.4-meter-long alligator that the owner was illegally keeping in a house in Hamburg, near Buffalo, New York, after they received information that it posed a threat to the environment.

The owner had kept the alligator, named Albert, in the home since the 1990s and allowed it to swim in the pool with people, including children, officials said.

Environmental officials said the alligator was blind and had spinal problems, Sky News reported.

The alligator’s owner said he will fight to get his pet back. Environmental protection officers seized a 30-year-old alligator found in a swimming pool on Wednesday after receiving information that it was an environmental hazard.

The permit to keep the alligator expired in 2021 and it has been kept illegally ever since. Owner Tony Cavalaro said Albert never put anyone in danger.

Environmental officials have not decided whether to file charges against Kavalar. The alligator was sent to a licensed caretaker until a permanent home can be found.
