Alonso asks his players to play smart

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Coach Bayer Leverkusen Xabi Alonso wants his team to play smart in the first leg of the last 16 of the Europa League against Qarabag at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, Baku, Azerbaijan, Friday (8/3/2024) early morning at 00.45 WIB.

Alonso said this because he wanted his team to get good results in Baku to make it easier to qualify for the quarter-finals when playing the second leg at BayArena.

“The Europa League is a very good competition. We want to fight for our chance. Then comes the Bundesliga again. We are ready,” said Alonso, quoted on the club’s official social media, Thursday.

“Now it’s the round of 16, no longer the group stage. We have to play smart to get good results. We know them, they know us,” he continued.

Meanwhile, one of the players, Robert Andrich, is very enthusiastic about welcoming the round of 16 which will be played first at home to Qarabag because as a player, he feels that he would prefer to play the first leg first at the opponent’s home ground.

“I prefer to play away first. Of course, the away goal rule no longer exists. But I want to be able to move on to the next round at home at BayArena,” he said.

In the Azerbaijani premier league, Qarabag is currently at the top of the standings with 60 points from 19 wins, three draws and three defeats.

Andrich also believes that the next match will not be easy even though at the same time, Die Werkself is in positive performance with 34 matches unbeaten this season.

“Qarabag are very strong in attack with lots of agile players. A little more vulnerable in defense. But this will be a difficult match, not as easy as many people imagine,” said Andrich.
