It was not an ordinary year, 2020. From China, the Covid 19 Pandemic immediately spread like wildfire, bringing the whole world to its knees. It has caused chain recessions, it has exposed the criticalities of health systems. It has hit and is still hitting all the inhabitants of the planet; of any nationality, sex, age, social class.
Yet it has never been the same for everyone. Once again, the most vulnerable, the persecuted minorities, the most vulnerable people paid the highest price. Not only because they lack less means to cure themselves or without any kind of protection. But also because in not a few cases the Pandemic has proved to be an instrument, as extraordinary as it is unexpected, for regimes and governments intolerant to dissent, to continue with greater force their repressive policies and violations of human rights.

The publication of Amnesty international’s annual report for 2020, which contains an in-depth analysis of global trends in human rights in 149 states, paints a picture once again, and probably even more than other times, worrying, if not dramatic. . “The pandemic has brutally exposed and exacerbated inequalities within states and between states and highlighted the incredible contempt our leaders display for our common humanity. Decades of divisive policies, wrong austerity measures and choices not to invest in shaky public structures have meant that many ended up being easy prey to the virus, ”said Agnès Callamard, new general secretary of Amnesty International.
