Annalena Baerbock candidate for the Green Chancellery: a Merkel grüne?

by admin

Annalena Baerbock, 40, is the candidate of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen for the role of chancellor: co-leader of the party since January 2018 together with Robert Habeck, 51, is the symbol of the great change proposed by the Greens, of the “new chapter ”in politics in Germany, in the name of“ clarity, transparency and a greener future ”.

It is the first time that the Greens have aimed at the chancellery, because they aim to become the first party in Germany in the general elections in September and to outclass the CDU / CSU. In the latest polls, the CDU / Csu has dropped to 29%, the Greens orbit around 20% but are on the rise. And it is the second time since 1949 that a woman has been nominated to become Chancellor, after Angela Merkel.

The appointment of Baerbock, who boasts an LL.M in public international law from the London School of Economics, was announced very punctually at 11:00, as announced, and will be ratified at the party congress held on 11- June 13. A style in sharp and provocative contrast to the visceral struggle that has been tearing apart the CDU / Csu Union for days over the choice of the Kanzlerkandidat between Markus Söder and Armin Laschet.

To become chancellor, Baerbock can focus on three post-election scenarios on September 26: the Greens become the first party in Germany and go to government with a “kiwi” coalition with CDU / CSU junior partner; the Greens go to government as the main party in a “green-red-red” coalition with the Social Democrats SPD and the far left Die Linke; the Greens go to government as the main party in a “green-red-yellow” coalition with the SPD and the liberals Fdp.

Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck, from the Realos current and therefore the conservative wing and not on the left, became leaders of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in January 2018 when the party was in a negative phase and traveling in the polls around 8%, surpassed by the far-right AfD party at 10%. In mid-2019, in the midst of the CDU crisis after a year of Merkel’s resignation, the Greens briefly found themselves head to head with the CDU / Csu at 26% in voters’ approval. However, the pandemic has overturned all patterns, imprinting extreme volatility in the polls: after the first wave of the coronavirus, the CDU / Csu returned to 38% while the Greens fell to 16%. The third wave has reversed this trend.
