The app is designed to promote the candidates who have the best chance of successfully fighting the incumbent and was designed by the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. A few hours before the start of the election vote, Apple and Google withdrew this procedure.
Roskomnadzor, a Russian telecom industry regulator, said that the app promoted the extremist activities of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). Developer Ivan Zhdanov described this statement on Twitter as “a mockery of common sense.”
“The official reason for deleting the app: Recognizing that FBK is an extremist organization, and the way FBK is recognized as an extremist organization is not a court, but a mockery of common sense. Google and Apple made a huge mistake.”
“The decision to delete Navalny’s application from Google Play and App Store is very disappointing.” A spokeswoman said on Twitter. “This is an act of political censorship without any reason.”
Apple’s message to developers says that “Smart Voting” will no longer appear in the country’s app stores, “because the content it contains is illegal in Russia.”
Russia had previously fined Apple US$12 million for antitrust issues, and the company is currently appealing.
