At least 16 dead and 11 injured after the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Venezuela

At least 25 people are dead after a collapse occurred in an illegal gold mine in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela. The collapse took place in an open pit quarry, burying several miners under an avalanche of earth. Dozens of people were working at the site when the incident occurred.

The primary opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), has expressed its deep pain over the tragedy and hopes for the speedy recovery of the injured individuals. Relatives of the victims gathered in Puerto Guacara, La Paragua, to await news and mourn their loved ones.

The injured miners were taken to a hospital in Ciudad Bolívar, while rescue and recovery efforts were initiated with support from a team from Caracas. The mining arc region in Bolívar, where the incident occurred, is known for its large reserves of gold, diamonds, iron, bauxite, quartz, and coltan.

The area is exploited by the Chavista regime and occupied by illegal groups and criminal gangs. Activists have denounced an “ecocide” in the area and the exploitation of children and women who work in the mines under poor safety conditions.

The boom in mining activity in the region has become a lifeline for nearby towns and has attracted thousands of unemployed people from across the country. However, illegal mining and criminal gangs smuggling gold are proliferating, according to authorities and critics of the Nicolás Maduro regime.

This tragic event is a reminder of the dangerous conditions under which mining activities are carried out in many cases, and highlights the need for better safety regulations and enforcement in the industry.
