At least 170 people were killed in a single day in a series of armed attacks in Burkina Faso

Last week at least 170 people were killed in a single day in a series of attacks in three cities in the northern West African country of Burkina Faso by armed groups. The Ouahigouya prosecutor made this known on Sunday, according to which the attacks were all carried out on February 25 in the cities of Komsilga, Nodin and Soroe, in the province of Yatenga. Many women and children were killed in the attacks: investigations into who carried them out are still ongoing, and no particular group has been accused.

However, it seems very likely that the culprits are Islamist jihadist groups, which in recent years have carried out many attacks in northern Burkina Faso. Local armed groups have controlled many of the regions in the northern part of Burkina Faso for years. This caused the death of thousands of civilians and forced approximately two million people (out of 22 million inhabitants) to abandon their homes. The country is increasingly politically unstable: it has suffered two coups in 2022 and a third attempt in 2023.

According to local authorities, these latest attacks are not linked to the one carried out on February 25 in a Catholic church in Essakane, a village in the north of the country near the border with Niger, in which 15 people were killed.
