“Barbie” notwithstanding: Women have fewer leading roles in Hollywood than in ten years

Despite the success of the Barbie film with 15 billion recorded kroner, only 30 of the 100 biggest films in 2023 had a female lead or co-lead.

This is the worst result since 2014, new data show tall from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, a University of Southern California think tank that studies diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry, according to The Guardian.

– This is a catastrophic setback for women in film. For the past 14 years, we have charted progress in the industry, and to see this turnaround is both surprising and in direct contrast to all the talk about last year being the “year of the woman,” says think tank leader Stacy L. Smith, associate professor of communication.

Missing effort from the industry

The disappointing 2023 result follows a record 2022 level, where 44 percent of films featured women in leading roles. The researchers behind the study call it an “industry failure”, and that the Barbie results are not reason enough for optimism. Recently, the Annenberg initiative presented another report which showed that the number of female directors is also decreasing, where they accounted for 16 per cent of the 100 biggest films – compared to 18 per cent the previous year.

– This year’s results show an industry that has become apathetic when it comes to efforts around diversity and inclusion.

But perhaps there is a clearing: This year’s biggest box office success in the US is “Mean Girls”, with a strong female ensemble, while in 2025 there will be a bunch of blockbusters with women in the lead role:

«Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire» med Rebecca Hall, «Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga» med Anya Taylor-Joy, «A Quiet Place: Day One» med Lupita Nyong’o og «Wicked» med Ariana Grande og Cynthia Erivo.
